Jack,
may I say you are an angel and thank you.I dont have all that much information but will give you what I have.
His name is Harry (a/k as Harold or Howard Earl Nichols. He was said to be born in Iowa to Etta (nee Howell)and William Nichols in 18 August,1893.Records to the Iowa BDM have no records of this.
He served in WWI and travelled to France(under which regiment I do not know). There are three states he may have enlisted with the USMC, these are, Iowa, Wyoming or California in 1917. I have records of a Harry E. Nichols who enlisted in Ames, Iowa, but it is not Harry Earl Nichols.According to my father, Harry also spoke of Turkey Creek, Wyoming, so he may have enlisted there.
He received the Croix de Geurre medal for saving a French General's life.
He was employed as a Marine Engineer in the merchant navy when he came to Australia in 1929/30.His last known address was 459 Turk Street, Sanfrancisco, California.I am not sure if he travelled to NSW or Victoria first as his Marriage Certificate gives birth place as IOWA, then NSW. He died in 1962 in Victoria.Harry also may have been of Cherokee descent, but have no proof at this stage.Thank you so much for helping me with my searching. He is one hard man to track down.
