Hi all,
Here is installment number five of Göring's love letters on the BMW. Thanks as usual to Hannes Täger for proof reading,(although this time I didn't make any mistakes, hooray). I left the letter composition a bit more in the German sentence structure to give it some of it's original flavor.
Best to all,
Dave Watts

Jagdgeschwader Frhr. v. Richthofen**************************************** ******************************** O.U.1.XI.1918.

Front certification BMW IIIa engine.
.................................................. ....

**************************************** By production and introduction of the BMW IIIa motor, the German fighter has become equal, or frequently, superior to the best enemy single-seaters.* This high altitude motor is a great advancement over all past motors.* Instead of diminishing in higher altitudes, its' efficiency, actually, only begins there.* The working reliability is likewise satisfying.* The motor worked in each application, excellently.* It must be carried out, by all means, to supply the front as rapidly as possible, and to a large extent with BMW motors, in order to keep superiority in the control of the sky.* Each fighter pilot requires urgently a BMW motor.

gez. Göring
Oblt. u. Geschwader (group) - Kommandeur.

No reply yet? I certainly appreciate this kind of information posted on the forum, even though I'm not quite qualified to stir up any knowledgeable controversy about it. Thanks for posting it.

An interesting thought... Göring's fanatical allegiance to the BMW must have been due to a genuine concern for achieving German air supremacy, not just hogging more kills during what everyone knew must be the last days of the war. He was flying much less by this time, and was apparently far more concerned with his administrative duties than his victory score. His thinking had changed from tactical to strategic.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the compliments.

Dave, yes, the letter is dated the 1st of November, 1918. I was bit surprised at the date as well, and wondered if it was a typo, but just have to assume it isn't.

Stephen, I agree with you that Göring must have adopted the attitude that he could do more good on the ground in acquisition, than in the air fighting. He may have not cut back his "saddle" time, but he may have changed his fighting participation to that of an overseer and supervisor, but these are pure speculations.

Best,
Dave Watts
