Seeking help or information from "those that know" I possess a WW1 British 1914/15 Trio & Memorial plaque named to Captain Alfred Skinner- commissioned into 4th South Lancs Regt. c.1912. Served with the RFC & listed as KIA 31st August 1916. RFC Communiques list Capt. Skinner as Missing on that date (one of three from 27 Sqn that day.) Comm.51 also mentioned for the first time the New Albatros D1 Scout. His body rests in the Metz-en-Couture Communal Cemetry, Pas de Calais, France. Question is can anyone point me in the right direction with regards finding out how he was killed etc; Any guidance appreciated.

Here is a little info taken from Henshaw's 'The Sky Their Battlefield;

Capt A Skinner 27Sqn Aircraft: Martinsyde G100 Serial #7482 left 0620 am as one of four aircraft sent to bomb billets in Havrincourt Wood.
Attacked after releasing bombs. Seen in dive with Hostile aircraft. Shot down in flames. Cpt Skinner was KIA. Shot down possibly by either Ltn W Fahlbusch of KG1 or Ltn Gustaf Leffers (listed in the ace section of this website I believe) of Jasta 1. Leffers claim was for a Martinsyde at Moislains at 0740 am (German time).

Four Martinsydes from 27 Sqn were shot down on this mission. 3 Aircraft from Jasta 1 (Leffers included) were involved in the action. The Jasta 1 aircraft were Albatros D1s and this indeed is listed as the first occasion on which the D1 was seen in combat by the allies.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

MDD
