In researching a 54 Sqn. (Camel) pilot 2/Lieut. H.R. Abey, I've found he was WIA and taken POW on 2 Nov. 1918. On 11 Nov. 1918, 54 Sqns aerodrome was located near Merchin just a few miles south of the French city of Lille. On 2 Nov. if they weren't here then they may have been further south west in the direction of Franqueville. I would like to ask the Forum, would there have been any record made of who brought this pilot down and the circumstances?
Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Ron B.

Last seen going down in control from 6000' south of Tournai. No Jasta claims for Camel that day. One unidentified SPAD, but hardly a likely mistake.
My guess?, ground fire or one of those 2 seaters that were such "easy" prey (according to some*G*)

Hope this helps.

BTW, he was previously hit in the fuel tank by ground fire on 1/10/18 but got back OK. Start of the month does not seem to be his lucky time!!!

regards

Darryl

Thanks for the information Darryl. There's one other pilot I'm researching and wonder if you would have any information on? He is Lieut. N.O.M. Foggo a Camel pilot in 201 Sqn. He was forced down over enemy territory and made prisoner on 8 Aug. 1918.
Thanks again

2Lt NOM Foggo, Canadian, seen to spin OOC east of Proyart whilst on line patrol to Merincourt (Railway?) at 11.05. Possibly no claim made by Jastas as nothing appears at a corresponding time.
201 lost 7 Camels that day and six pilots, the seventh, Lt R McLaughlin was shot down in flames but survived (was in fact OK!!!)

Sorry I can't give more on Foggo.

regards

Darryl

Thanks very much! The information you've provided will be kept in a file I"ve been making on First World War airmen from my area.
All the best
Ron
