I have to find that reference. I am also going to study mediaeval chivalry because I have a hunch that although Victorian chivalry emphasized gentlemanly conduct, I think the original kinghts were a little more vicious, thus more like the pilots of WWI.

If this study goes well, I may be able to do a PhD comparing chivalry in the world wars. But let me get this one done first!

Hi Bernard!
Would it be at all possible to get those German
diaries posted on The Aerodrome? Am I asking too much? Translated into English as well? Impossible,
I hear you scream? Pleeeease!
By the way, how is that rotary project going? Any

I have tried to hold fire ,but,my stiff upper lip has twitched.
The only true Knights of the Air were Englishmen. We invented this Knightly bull@#$%.Until you've read the instruction sheet don't presume to lecture about Glory.
Even Kaiser Bill acknowledged that God was an Englishman!!!

Ginger Old Fellow

You remind me of an elderly English lady who lived next door to my Grandmother when I was in high school.

One summer evening we were gathered in my Gran's garden and she was talking about English history. Extolling one splendid English military victory after another. I finally asked her, "What about the American Revolution?"

She replied, "Thank you, My Dear, for reminding me of another splendid English victory."

I asked, "How can the American Revolution be an English victory?"

She answered, "Think about it my Dear Boy. Englishmen fighting for English rights against a German king and his Hessian mercenaries! Of course! Another splendid English victory!"

Go figure.

Ginger;
I do believe old boy that chivalry begin in France, and was brought over to England when William came over kicked King Harold's butt.

Hi, 'Mick' Ginger!
You have done it again!

God was asked why he blessed the Scots with such a pretty landscape and good and strong inhabitants. He answered: Wait! You did not see their neighbours!

Greetings

I was thinking about this yesterday as I was reading Winter's First to the Front. Of course the original image of the RFC was built by middle-to-upper class Britons. But what I need to find is how this image evolved after other segments of society, plus the huge contribution of the Dominions, entered the air service. I'll have to construct a duel argument of how this image affected the pilot's personal views, and how the general public viewed the air service...

Perhaps if you read one of Ira Jones' books it might help.He gives a good insight into the attitudes of the RFC.Problem is he skirts the thorny bits,Ira was all for riddling Huns in parachutes, both pilots and balloon observers. He only touches on the rows this caused with his more 'play the game'comrades.Hope this is more use than my first effort!!!

Is there a good bio (by academic standards) of Ira Jones, one that includes the darker stuff?
