I read this evening that D. H. Lawrence, the famous author, married Frieda von Richthofen, the sister of Manfred and Lothar. The author stated that after the wedding, Lawrence and his bride were forced by public hostility to seek refuge in the English countryside, where they hid in barns like animals.

Does anyone know any more details about this?

Who states, that she was MvR's sister?

Actually, she was not Manfred and Lothar's sister. Perhaps, a distant cousin? See:

A rose by any other name. Interesting to note that she knew D. H. and John Thomas.

I read this astonishing bit of information in the book, "The Royals" by Kitty Kelley.

I quote, "It was Lord Stamfordham who received the unenviable job of telling King George V about D. H. Lawrence, who had been hounded into hiding because he married a German woman. The once revered writer had married the sister of German military aviator Baron Manfred von Richthofen, the legendary Red Baron, credited with shooting down eighty Allied planes during World War I. After their wedding, Lawrence and his bride, Frieda, were forced by public hostility to seek refuge in the English countryside, where they hid in barns like animals.

Consider the possibility that Lawrence and bride were simply nature lovers who enjoyed doing their loving in nature. Mac?

Not one mistake. Never cease to be on your guard, Observer & Ginger, for the price of complacency is just too much to afford.

Frieda von Richthofen was a cousin of Manfred and Lothar, not a sister. If I remember correctly she had a sister who became involved with Thomas Mann.

Der Alte:

Concurring with Michael here, Frieda was a cousin to MvR from the Metz area. (Anyone know if she was a first cousin or distant one?) Frieda had a sister named Else and Manfred had a sister named Ilse. Maybe that’s where people become confused with the sister vs. cousin relationship between them? Else married a man named Jaffe who ran around with Max Weber, but I haven’t heard about the Thomas Mann involvement. I, too, would be interested in the story behind the Lawrences living in England.

As a family the vRs seem to have gotten around. I can't quite recall the details, but they owned some land in my part of Ontario.
