Hi all

Going through some books I discovered that Maj. Hartney scored only 1 victory (25 June 1918) with the 27th Aero Sq. His personal page on this site however credit him with 1 more. Does anyone have information on this second kill with the 27th.

Thanks

Gert

Hi Gert: In his autbiography "Up & At' Em" HH is cited as having 6 victories: A note offers that he gained.. "five of these while in the British Army." He felt chagrin when after a Gotha bomber wreck was discovered downed in the exact area where he had fired on one during a night sortie in a Camel of the 185th on Oct 22nd of '18. He had survived several self-induced in-flight emergencies and "was disgusted with myself and did not even put in a combat report. Had I done so I would have had an official victory of a very unusual nature." Do you suppose somehow he was later allowed this additional victory? Do you have his book? It is oddly optimistic in one encounter which I called "Hartney's Eindekker Massacre" in thread of several months back. He states his gunner got up to "11" Fokkers in one sustained battle. They duo was credited with several as I recall; this makes Hartney one of the many "Aces" who actually didn't do any firing on the occasion of a portion of their "victories". I don't think this helps you much but as there there it is for whatever it is worth. Best Regards. Lee

Hartney is listed with 7 victories in "Above The Trenches" - 2 Fokker monoplanes on 1 July 1916, a Fokker D (?) on 20 October, a Halberstadt scout on 2 February 1917 and two Albatros scouts on 14 February. His 7th victory is shown as having been achieved over a two-seater on 25 June 1918 while with the 27th USAS and shared with 2nd Lt J K McArthur.

All of Hartney's victories with 20 Sqn RFC were in the FE2d so were naturally all scored by his gunners (2/AM A Stanley for the first two, 2nd Lt W Jourdan for Nos 3, 5 and 6 and 2nd Lt H R Wilkinson for No 4).
