An entry a while ago was discussing the existence of one opperational zeppelin in the Austrian air force in 1914.

1) Was it used solely for aerial observation, or bombing as well?

2) If used for bombing, and noting the Austrian presence on the eastern (Russia) and Southern (Italy) fronts, did it bomb any cities?

3) Were any more zeppelins made in Austria during WWI?

My great grandfather, Hrihoriy "Harry" Kowalchuk was a Ukrainian drafted into the Austrian army. He was in the infantry, I assume on the Eastern Front. His skills as a tailor landed him on the maintenance crew for a zeppelin. He had passed on stories of flying observation patrols, and I have heard that zeppelin crews were relatively ad hoc (i.e. "We need another crew member, grab that mechanic"). Apparently my great grandfather suffered hearing loss from the loud zeppelin engines (my early memories of him involved a lot of shouting).

I would be grateful for any information that may exist about him. His commonly used name was "Harry", but his given name "Hrihoriy" translates as "Gregory." I don't know what name he served under.

Thanxabunch.

I remain,
RayK

Ray,

I can not help you with the wished details but maybe you should contact Harry C. Redner via http://www.luftschiffharry.de/

He
is THE expert for German Army airships (in my humble opinion) and could have some detailed knowledge about the Austrians too or could know somebody who knows more.

Regards,
Hannes
