In his article published in Small Air Forces Observer n. 38, April 1986, Jim Maas derscribes the national insignias layout of a Russian Ni. 17 as follows:

<<The unique insignia on the wings are white discs painted in the standard French roundel locations, with a blue equilateral triangle facing forward (the scheme is from a photo – the blue triangle is as good a guess as we can come up with. We know it wasn’t red, and none of the other primary colours make sense).>>

Was this insignia layout really unique ?
Any chance it was adopted as the standard practice by the aeroplanes flown in support of the White party of the Russian civil war of 1918-20 ?
If that was not the case: did "White" Russian Nieuports carry the IRAS national markings ?

Many thanks to all those who will take the time and trouble to reply.

Have alook at http://wio.newmail.ru/simbols/simbols.htm
the
site relates to Russian aircraft and insignias; it shows that the White Army adopted the blue equilateral triangle in either a white circle or white square.

I recently received a book from Russia, in Russian not translated unfortunately, dealing with all markings of the russian Civil war and they do have colour illustrations. There's a Hansa-Brandenberg c1 witha black outlined while circle with a black triangle inside.
I'm doing a Russian civil war patch for Red Baron 2 and have found that there could be up to as many variants in markings as there were planes in the unit!
