An interesting thing while reading Albert Ball VC.
it seems Rhys Davids first encounter, or there abouts, came againt a hot pilot from Jasta 11. The German showed his prowess by diving and climbing against him and another pilot.

it appears that they clashed some, but then the German pilot took off and away towards Douai, leaving Rhys with a bullet in his water jacket in engine and forcing him to land on Allied side.

According to Rhys, it was a red albatros with a green stripe behind cockpit.

Albert Ball VC says it was probably Simon, since he was shot down and captured in a very similiar marking a/c.

High in the Empty blue, Revell has it as Kurt Wolff in that machine. Tho i can see from his experience, is it for sure that he flew that a/c that day? as pics i have of his alb shows all red or red aft of cockpit.

Ron

I saw it reported that Kurt Wolff had shot down ARD, although I do not recall the source. Although I am by no means an expert concerning individual planes, I have also seen it reported that Wolff's red J11 planes also carried some green markings.

My Gallery
Ron F:
I think it was Ltn. Georg Simon. His Albatros D.III had a green band aft of the cockpit and Ltn.Kurt Wolff a green spinner and rear fuselage and empennage. Rhys-Davids alludes to a green stripe, I think it was Simon.

DSA,
thanks, green nose and aft fuselage? the JG1 pub on colours from Albatros says it was red aft markings. why wouldnt it have red for its color, he was in Jasta 11 after all?
