Geeeze, I happen to think that "the Blue Max" is an excellent example of Great War aviation novel.
I've read Gann (In the Company of Eagles) and I think it is an "OK" WWI aviation novel, but I also happen to believe that Jack C. Hunter's work is so far-and-above any other work that it is by itself, to the extent that I have obtained an autographed copy of that book.
Of course, some of the other works I have not yet read.
