During my attendance at the Dawn Patrol Rendezvous last weekend, I saw quite a few re-enactors dressed in German, American and French uniforms. These fine fellows also acted as groundcrew for the two Fokker Tri-Planes which put on a fine show, especially Ross' loop. But weren't German mechanics and groundcrew personel attired in black uniforms? Any discription of these uniforms worn by inlisted men and NCO's would be greatly appreciated.

Have a look at a WW1 photo. If the uniforms look black then they are most likely chrome yellow.

All uniforms were "feldgrau" (field-grey); neither black nor yellow.

As far as I know German aircraft mechanics wore something like a black uniform or overall short before and during WW2.

Bob:
German aircraft mechanics wore a two piece black cotton(?) fatique working uniform while functioning as a mechanic. The standard field grey uniform was used for parade and off duty.
