hi; does anybody have any data or references on the utilization of heavier-than-air aircraft by the french in their african colonies before WWI? Was there any offensive actions undertaken by these early military airplanes against the local tribes?
I have never heard of such a thing. As far as I know, the only a/c that flew in French colonies before WWI, were civilian. But I know that some a/c were used for military purposes, including bombing, by Italy in Lybia.
I remember an article or photographs of French airplanes in Africa in the French mag "L´Illustration" but not before 1915.
Additional one source claimed that a Spanish aircrew was wounded by rifle fire of African tribes before WWI but I can not garantuee the correctness of this message.
