Gentlemen,
Is it known from whom A. Fokker bought his paint/ dope or did he manufacture his own. It strikes me that if we could track down his source then there is the possibility that the color recipes still exist. The implications of this are obvious.
Additionally, the underside color for the Dr I in the windsock books seems to me to be rather too dark. It may be the correct hue ( I surely don't know ) but Is the value presented too dark.
Do any samples of Dr I fabric exist other than the scraps from MvRs 425/17?

Terry:
I have pursued that question in regard to Fokker's dope and paint source, but I came up blank. From data supplied to me by Paul S.Leaman which is his fabric and color analysis of three fabric samples from Fok.DR.I 144/17, (G.125)held in the IWM. (These are NOT from Rodney Gerrard.) The colors are noted for solid area sas 4F5/6 and 4F8 olive brown and 3D8 for thin areas. olive. A thin coat of linseed oil varnish is applied as a waterproofing coat. The under sides are 25C5 which includes the yellow shift as a result of a thin coat of linseed oil varnish. Incidently I have just sold my piece of fabric from MvR's Fok. DR.I 425/17 which has been authenticated by Alan Toelle. Rimell's colors are too dark.

If you look on Charles Gosse's webpage (which can be accessed through forum links on this webpage) you can see his example of fabric which is believed to be from the underside of MvR's 425/17.

I made a profile some time ago of DrI 202/17 of Jasta 19, Walter Gotsch.

I have always been interested in opinions as to the underside color of the DrI. I have read descriptions ranging from light blue or "skyblue" to blue gray or teal? What are your thoughts on the shade? It would seem to me that a more flat blue with slight gray tone would be more appropriate.

Gentlemen,
Please forgive me being so late in thanking you for your replies. I have been out of town on business and had trouble accessing the 'net. I do appreciate your comments and for what it is worth, Wingstrut my best guess is a pale sky blue with a slight grey green element.
Thanks again,
Terry
