Today is 29 Sept 2000. Eighty-two years ago today the great Frank Luke Jr. ended his brief but brilliant career as a driver, shooting down three Boche balloons, and possibly two Fokker D-7's in the bargain, before yielding to his injuries and the damage to his SPAD, crash-landing behind enemy lines. He refused surrender and fought with the enemy soldiers who came to capture him using his M1911 service pistol until shot dead.

Frank Luke showed the world that the spirit of the Alamo was not gone. He showed them that sometimes death is preferrable to dishonor, since he felt that capture was dishonorable.

I hope he rests well buried in foreign soil. I hope he is content.

Semper Fi, FLJ. . .rest easy, knowing that you are not forgotten.

Shooter,
I salute the fallen warrior! A true warrior and one of the few who displayed the testicular fortitude that defined our American forefathers! Courage, and honor were well defined by this man.
Regards bro,

Jim:

Salute returned, brother-man! No salute is worth a damn until it is returned and acknowledged!

Thank you all for respecting MY hero. FLJ has been my guiding light since I was a boy, and if I have not always been up to his standards of heroism, let it be said that his has always been far in excess of mine!

Frank Luke Jr. rules here, sports fans!

Shooter;
Luke is one of my heroes also. I'll toast him by going home and building his Spad from a kit I've had for several years.

Bravo! Here here! A great toast to not only my childhood hero but the best example of courage.

I'm a day late on the toast, but... hear, hear!

Or is it "here, here?"

Whatever. You know, you guys are in grave danger of being branded lunatics for believing that all those witnesses actually witnessed what they swore they witnessed. Y'all need to get on the Billy Bishop bandwagon. That's where all the hip people hang out.

Oh, stop it. Can't anybody have fun around here anymore?
