On the one hand, it is understandable why the new JG1 Kommandeur should not have put up with the disobedience shown by Gabriel. However, the aggressive spirit and skill displayed by Gabriel is something you would think is desired in pilots under your command.
Does anyone know the underlying details associated with Göring's dismissal of Gabriel? Did HG need to throw around his weight in order to make a case for his authority? Were some of the other JG1 stars openly critical of Göring's appointment from the start, giving him a perceived need to show his authority?
I wonder how MvR, Reinhard, Udet or Löwenhardt
(all former JG1 commanders) would have reacted in a similar situation. Would they have called off a "winnable fight already in progress" (as Gabriel described Göring did), and would they have reacted to Gabriel's decision to fight the same way that HG did?
