Hello, does anyone have any photos or knowledge of Royal Flying Corps uniforms? I have been offered an RFC captain's tunic, but before parting with any money, would like to have a better idea of what details to look for.
Is it a Maturnity Uniform , 1907 Officers Tunic, 1917, or 1918? IF it is a 1907 the pips are on the sleeve, if 1917 pips on shoulder and false belt instead of Sam Browne.
1918 is Blue (really RAF)
The basic description I have been given (I've not seen it yet) is that it is a four pocket blue, with all RFC buttons, four large, and ten small, rank of captain with guilt RFC collar badges, and in immaculate cond. ( found recently in a cupboard)
It would be a late 1918 RAF uniform at best. The RFC buttons sound strange on this uniform I have a set of albatross RAF buttons from 1918. This may be a WWII reserve uniform. Many who were in the Great War who served in WWII were allowed to wear RFC insignia if they had served in the RFC.
That's the sort of information I was worried about! that it might be a later issue with RFC buttons. I appreciate your advice, and will see if I can get a jpeg of this item. The asking price is about $500 US , if it is genuine would this be a fair price ?
