I'll be visiting France for the first time, and am interested in locating any museums related to French WWI aviation. Thanks for any help.

Bill:

The Musee de l'Aire, NE of Paris at Le Bourget Airport - quite posibly the finest WW1 and earlier collection in the world (Check out Guynemer's SPAD 7 - restored with it's original fabric).

Website: www.mae.org

You lucky guy!

VBR,

When I was there in January, I didn't allow enough time to see it properly. I knew it was a large museum, but i expected a small WWI section like the one at the USAFM. Not so. Take at least an hour or more just for the WWI section - nothing else. They have an excellent collection and at least two dioramas (that whatcha call 'em?) of the WWI aerodrome and trench atmosphere. Very worthwhile, and Ira is right... probably one of the best early aviation collections in the world. And a huge fine art gallery as well. Go, man, go.

I just finished looking around at the www.memorial-flight.com website. This is a great website and the work that has been done on their aircraft is amazing. Although, I have one question. On all of the pictures of the Fokker Dr1 their are no machine guns mounted on the airplane. The other aircraft are armed. What happened to the Spandaus?

Thanks in advance,
Phil

Hi Phil,
Yes you're right. The Spandaus are missing simply because they are not fitted yet.
But, sure, she'll have them in place at the end of the overhaul

Best regards
