Dan-San:
The designation 'D.VIII' is correct, and follows the form established in summer 1918. The D-type applies to single-seat, armed scout. Number of wings had nothing to do with it. Perhaps "D" originally meant 'doppeldecker' - as "E" was eindecker, and "Dr" dreidecker, but when the designation was made, "D" was applicable to the type - as it was for the Junkers D.I, another late-war monoplane. Other, experimental or prototypes from the period also bear the same designation.
Cheers
Craig

Craig:
If you have Idflieg information that can confirm The "D" designation to mean, " Single-seat armed scout" The Idflieg list I have states:
D= Single-engined single-seat armed biplane.
E= Single-engined single-seat armed monoplane. If you have a copy could you e-mail the text?

Sorry for the delay: I've been vacationing with only sporadic access to a 'puter. I'll look tonight for my source.

It's not in any of the books I have at home. Perhaps I read it on the web somewhere. I still think that the designation method changed, probably while the first E.V's were being repaired. I find it implausible that Fokker, Junkers, Siemens and others would all "misname" their momoplanes with a "D" designation.
I'll keep looking for the source, but if it was on the web, I'll need some luck remembering.

Craig:
To further confuse this question is the Kondor E.III and the Kondor E.IIIa which appearrde at the Fighter Competion in October 1918. As you listed the Junker D.I with the "D" designation appearred at the July '18 Fighter Competion at which time the Fokker Monoplane had the E.V designation.
This leads me believe the designation change occurred in late June 1918. I wonder if Hannes has anything on this question?
