Could someone possibly tell me the origin of "Vieux Charles" (Old Charles) on Capitaine Guynemers aircraft. Sorry if this is a repeat request. Thanks!

Guyenemer inherited an aircraft from another pilot,Charles Bonnard, when that pilot was transferred to Serbia in summer 1915. The aircraft was already marked "Vieux Charles"...Guyenemer simply kept the marking. Hope this helps. JimR

His first aircraft, a Morane type L, previously flown by Charles Bonnard, had “Vieux Charles” painted on it when Guynemer acquired it. He so liked the name that thereafter he painted that name on all his aircraft. Why Bonnard called it “Le Vieux Charles” in the first place is a mystery. Didn’t Pierre Clostermann name his typhoon “Le Vieux Charles” in WW 11 ?
