Dear Fellow WW I Avfans:
The PIPE Here...I may eventually purchase one of those beautiful Proctor Fokker Eindecker radio control Scale aircraft kits, and I'd like to convert it into the earlier Fokker E. I version, just like
Kurt Wintgens had under him when he scored the very FIRST fighter victory on July 1st, 1915. I have three printed sources of documentation on hand-GERMAN COMBAT PLANES, by Ray Wagner and Heinz Nowarra...FOKKER EINDECKER IN ACTION, one of the Squadron/Signal softcover books, and COLOR PROFILES OF WORLD WAR I COMBAT PLANES, by Giorgio Apostolo and Giorgio Bignozzi.
I also know of an "Aircraft in Profile" series monograph on "The Fokker Monoplanes" which is in the bound hardcover 'Volume 2' of that well-known old British series of aircraft monographs-and, although I'm not certain, there may also be one on the Fokker Eindeckers in the much more recent Ray Rimmell-published WINDSOCK DATAFILE series!
I also checked a couple of sources on the Web-one here at "TheAerodrome.com", and a European source-and not many of these sources-books and/or websites-completely agree with each other. Most sources agree on an 8.95 meter (29'2") figure for the wingspan, except the Squadron book which gives a 8.53m (almost 28' on the nose). The given fuselage length seems to be in agreement at about 6.75m (22'2") long, because of the E.I's fuselage having one LESS structural bay in it, in the aft section, than the much more familiar E.III version. The only source that gives a differing figure for the length is the Wagner/Nowarra book at 7.31m-this is most likely a screw-up, and could be ignored.
Does anyone here think the 8.95 meter wingspan and 6.75 meter length could be the most accurate ones? I'll most likely get the PLANS for the Proctor Eindecker first, to make certain that the "given" most common dimensions can be used to convert the kit into the E.I version-I always use photographs as the final determinant of scale accuracy, and the Squadron book has LOTS of these of the E.I, although a number ARE mislabeled as E II!
The cowl of the E.I was also smaller in diameter, due to its Gnôme Lambda engine (a 7-cylinder 80-hp unit, the basis of the Oberursel U.0 engine) and the E.I's fuselage forestructure did not need the upper longeron add-ons to accept the larger-diameter Gnôme Monosoupape 100 hp (Oberursel U.I) 9-cylinder cowl.
I just need to know if anyone can quote me any of the information from the Aircraft in Profile series 'installment' "The Fokker Monoplanes", about the Fokker E.I dimensions, and/or any WINDSOCK DATAFILES about the Eindeckers that might also have the E.I's dimensions in it! Please Email me at
thepipe@mediaone.net for any help you can give!
Yours Sincerely,
The PIPE!
