G'day All,

While researching Australians in the RNAS, I came across an entry in TSTB that has Stan Dallas in combat with an LVG(DES) on October 21 1916 whilst flying N500. This victory is not listed in ATT or its supplement.

Can anyone help me confirm that this was not a confirmed victory.

Regards,
Andrew.

Andrew,

Cross and Cockade (GB) Vol.2-No.1 1971 has an article on Dallas. In his list of victories, it mentions an LVG DES near Dixmude in N500 on the 21st of October. The List of Victories has under it "From "Pilots Flying Log Book"" and furthur down, "These victories are as listed in R.S. Dallas's Log Book, which was kindly lent by his brother Mr Gordon Dallas".

Dear Andrew,
The information I included for Dallas did indeed draw on that US C&C article and the list of victories mentioned by Cam (Unfortunately there were no details actually narrated in the text of the article). Futhermore, his shooting down of an enemy machine on that day is mentioned in RNAS Serials and Units by Sturtivant and Page under Tripe N500.

None of which really conclusively answers your question whether it was confirmed! You better get further corroborating evidence to be absolutely sure, and I'll definitely look into it a bit further myself.

If you want a copy of the article I could get it to you.

Regards,

Trevor

Thanks Cam and Trevor,

hopefully Russell might respond to this as well. Dallas was well known for not puuting in CITAR's, and I have always wondered if his score would have surpassed Bob Little's.

Trevor thank you for the kind offer, but Cam is already organising a copy for me. On another note, I seem to recall you mentioning a supplement to TSTB, is that still on the cards?

Regards,

Andrew.

Hi Trev, and Andrew and Cam.

Short answer, cant remember. I know I had trouble getting all the Dunkirk stuff, but October doesnt spring to mind as the missing month. Possibly did not think it was confirmed? As to an error in producing the list, most likely, but I must say I dont intend digging around to check, as I would take the evidence from Trev, and Rays books as saying more than the flat minimum needed for saying there was a claim.

Thanks for the reply Russell.

How incomplete is the Dunkirk stuff?

Hi Andrew,

The claim is also included in RNAS Serials, which Ray compiled mostly from Comabt reports etc. I can't find the stuff as they were still "A" wing at that stage and aren't in the records I have for the Naval Squadrons. But I would say that there is definately a CITAR somewhere, although it probably wasn't confirmed.

regards

Darryl
