Some of us are trying to help the son of a veteran find out a little bit of his father's service in WWII. His father died when he was 2. On his father's headstone it says 842ABN. Can anyone tell me what unit this was?

Was his father a paratrooper? The ABN might stand for "Airborne", and the 842 could refer to the brigade or regiment. I only know of 2 Airborne divisions that served in WWII, the 82nd and the 101st.

I'll concede the point to Jim on this one...an internet search did not turn up any connection with "Airborne" and "842".
Hey guys, if you haven't done so, download "webferret"....saves bunches of time if you need information fast.

Was there such a thing as an administration battallion, perhaps connected to the quartermaster corps or an induction center? I can't find any unit on the web with this designation.

Actually, the US Army had at least 5 Airborne Divisions: 13th, 17th, 82nd, and 101st in Europe and 11th in the Pacific. Most likely, though, we're looking for an artillery battalion. The American Army organized its artillery into seperate battalions, each with its own number. (My dad, for example, was in the 367th Field Artillery). The units were further distinguishhed as Field, Coast, or Anti-Aircraft Artillery. I've been looking for info on the 842nd, and haven't had any luck yet. The U.S. had artillery battalions at the division, corps and army level. The artillery was one of the army's strong suits, well equipt, trained and supplied. Hope this helps.

since we're not having much luck identifying the unit he was attached to, the only other suggestion I have is to contact the Department of Veterans Affairs, or the Department of the Army. If any personal effects of the man in question are available, such as discharge papers, or even a social security number, it would help in finding information.
Best of luck in this.
Mike
