I have Two different reference books showing A. Rabens Dr I As Blue and white and at least one showing it as red and white. It is lovely either way but I am somewhat obsessed with modelling in historically accurate color schemes. I seem to recall reading somewhere that J 18 Squadron markings were red and white. Can anyone offer something more than speculation?

Go with the red Terry. The blue version was around in the seventies but was discredited by the eighties. It did however re-surface in a compilation work a couple of years ago and is circulating again. I recently saw an otherwise quite unbeleivable but blue 1/72 Dr1 from an Italian modeller. It was so good I didn't have the heart to tell him

cheers

My Gallery
I second the red. I have seen a number of old profiles showing the "blue" as you indicated. Jasta 18 used red and white. I just did a nice little 72nd scale D7 in the scheme. I also have a D7 profile up at my website.

Give a little weathering to the white paint. The white paint faded and /or flaked off on a lot of aircraft.
