hello, excuse my poor english but I'm french...The personal emblem of Major Francesco Baracca, the Prancing Black Horse (cavalino rampante in Italian), that was gifted by the mother of Francesco, Countess Paolina Biancoli to Enzo Ferrari. But it seems Baracca has recovered this emblem on a WWI german aircraft which belong a pilot of Stutgart , what explain the resemblance between the 2 emblems.
Have you informations ?
Thank you
Denis

The precise date Baracca decorated for the first time his aircraft with his black emblem hasn't still been ascertained.Referring to V.Manca it happened in the evening of April,7 1916,the day he scored his first victory.Although there's no evidence that this date is correct the month of April 1916 is a very possible period. In any case the date of cavallino's birth was far antecedent to the arrive of the German units on the Italian front (Autumn '17) so it is not clear how could he have recovered it from a German pilot's aircraft.
B. had joined aviation coming from a cavalry regiment (Piemonte Reale, were he owned a black horse). In the idea of using his horse as a personal marking in memory of his old regiment he wasn't probably unique since other pilots coming from cavalry could well also have done the same (it could be the case of that Stuttgarter pilot). This doesn't signify, however he had recovered anything from an other aircraft.

PS What's the source of your information?

Similarly, Barracca's use of that marking reminds me of Oliver von Beaulieu-Marconnay using the horse brand of his old regiment (4th Dragoons), as his personal marking. I suppose the idea was that he was 'branding' his new 'horse'!

There are no photographic evidence of the Prancing Horse until spring 1917. Baracca chose this marking because the Prancing Horse was the insignia of his former Cavalry Regiment, the Piemonte Reale (Royal Piedmont). I agree with Andrea, which is your source about the german pilot?
