Captain Albert Berry made the first successful parachute jump from an airplane in Jefferson, Mississippi on this date in 1912.
Two years later the nations of Europe devoted a lot of time, effort, and money in developing excuses to justify the use of this new method of exiting a flying craft.

Mike,

I thought that the Brits felt that supplying their flyers with 'chutes would "encourage" them to bail out too quickly. Hence they were never supplied with such a "luxury". This was, IMO, a disgraceful policy.

Mark,
It makes sense....why throw away a perfectly good aeroplane just because it's burning and spinning out of control....you'll only have to explain it at the courts martial.

Mike

*grin*

Bottom line is that the airmen who were the best off were the baloon observers. At least, they had the best chance of getting back down to Earth.

Drew,
I beg to differ with you. Everyone had the same chance of getting back to earth...100%.
Now, at what rate of speed and in what physical shape are questions that can be debated.
VBR,
Mike

I thought Grant Morton was the first man to successfully jump from an aeroplane. He reportedly jumped from a Wright Model B airplane flying over Venice Beach, California in 1911.

I humbly stand corrected.
