The 8th Aero Squadron was an observation squadron flying DH-4 Liberties. They were formed up at Kelly Field and transfered to Mt Clemens, Mich. They took their aircraft maintenence training in England and arrived in Amanty, France in August 1918. They moved to Ourches on August 31 where they had their first flying accident that day. E. Kingsland and Corp. Hand were killed when their DH-4 skidded into the ground. Info from WINGS OF HONOR, which lists a full roster of the officer personel.

8th Aero Squadron

The Squadron arrived on the Front at Ourches on 31 July, 1918, and was assigned to the 4th Corps, Observation Group, 1st Army, on 14 August 1918. The Squadron was engaged in the operations in the Toul Sector, Chateau-Thierry, Saint Mihiel, and the Argonne-Meuse 1st and 2nd offecsives, terminating its work on 5 February 1919. It suffered twelve casualties, consisting of 4 killed and 8 prisoners.

The insignia for the 8th Aero Squadron was an American eagle, holding the American Liberty Bell, and its wings are spread out horizontally.

Does you friend have his father's small (approximately 1",or 1 1/2" wide) metal insignia pin, or badge, of the eagle holding the Liberty Bell?

Regards,
Cliff Presley

Thanks Steve for the info about Cliff. My friend has seen his local library about the book. Actually, since I live within just a few blocks of the Air and Space museum, I could go to their research library but haven'y done so yet. Regards de Carl
