I have seen references to this flyer as an American, including this website. However, information is very scanty. Records in Ottawa indicate that he was British born and educated and emigrated to Canada around 1911. He learned to fly in Canada and then served with 23 Sqn., scoring 7 victories. There is one reference indicating some connection to Norfolk,Va. (home after the war?) Does anyone have any definite info on White? Was he Brit/Canadian/American?

This is the best I can offer, assuming a Canadian connection (and maybe not, given the variation in Christian names).

WHITE, Lieutenant Harold Albert - Distinguished Flying Cross - awarded as per London Gazette dated 3 June 1919. Born in England, 14 February 1896; educated there to 1911. Home in Brantford, Ontario (engineer); taken on strength of Training Division, 17 January 1918; served in No.90 Squadron (dates not known); with No.23 Squadron, 23 September 1918 to 26 January 1919; hospitalized on latter date; to England, 30 January 1919. No citation other than "in recognition of distinguished services rendered during the war".

Hi Hugh,
That was the info I had as well. A list of American volunteers in a copy of the American WW1 aviation history journal a couple of years ago had White listed with 23 Sqn and the notation "Norfolk,VA" for hometown. I wondered if there may have been confusion and White had been from Norfolk,England. Hopefully we can find out a bit more about this pilot.
