Can someone relay the date of Putnam's transfer from the French Air Service to the American? btw, did he serve with the Cigognes? Also, what books would be the best reference?

I've seen Putnam's death described in different manners, having read that he died on the short end of a 1 on 5 fight, while others have stated he died at the hands on the ace von Hantleman. Does anyone know any details of Putnam's last flight?

David Putnam was commissioned into the USAS on 10 June 1918, evidently he still flew with SPA 38 after his commissioning, scoring several victories with two confirmations.

Putnam is listed as entering service with the 139th pursuit squadron of the USAS on 30 June 1918. I suspect he may have actually come to the squadron a few days earlier but I am not certain. He died while fighting several Fokker D7s. Apparently he was on his own in this dogfight. The German ace Georg von Hantelmann from Jasta 15 is credited with shooting him down. Hope this helps.

regards,

MDD

Hi,
He was sent to the 103rd on 24 June as acting CO where cited with Medaille militaire and Croix de Guerre from previous dates with French service.

He had as many as 29-34 victories claimed, but only 13 were confirmed.

His first victory was 30 June with 139th.

He also flew with Lafayette Escadrille and SPa 94.

regards,
Ron F.
