I, too, recall the hair on my neck bristling as the CWH Lancaster fired up one Merlin after another before taxying away and taking off. The only comparable event in my life was about 1983 when the USSR (as it still was) presented a T-34 tank to the Canadian War Museum. The ceremony - at night - was inside the museum, but outside the darkness was filled with the incredible roar of the tank being run up. I tried to imagine German infantry hunkering down, listening to 500 such tanks warming up. I do not think my imagination came close.
