Hello Bob,
I didn't want to use this forum to promote another site, namely.... wwiaviation.com - as it appears to me that a lot of it has been copied word-for-word from theaerodrome.com. But...considering you have linked your email addy as [email protected] I have no choice. However, there are many other WWI aviation sites on the www. For a comprehensive listing please refer to my links page at http://www.geocities.com/aw3aw3/links.htm and be sure to visit my WWI Aviation Image Archive at http://www.geocities.com/aerodromeaces

I love these self-promotion opportunities.

Others (myself included) have wondered this, and the answer seems to be "No", in part because the Second World War air war becomes so vast, complex and important that no single web site could accomodate it. One must thus find specialist sites and forums. Even "The Aerodrome" does not cover the First Worlf War air war in its totality; the biographical pages deal chiefly with fighter aces although the books and aircraft sections give balance. The chief preoccupation of "Forumites" is fighter aces, with the occasional nod at Zeppelins. For all its faults, the Aerodrome is a fine website - but if it cannot cover the whole of 1914-1918 aerial warfare, what would be the challange of a site covering the whole of the 1939-1945 air war ?

speaking of self-promotion I visited that site and you've got some fine pictures there. I really appreciated the balloon and two-seater pictures. . . and I thought, wow, what's the deal with that wing mounted Maxim!? I thought it was kinda weird to have a gattling gun out on the wing... was it powered by 'run off' from the engine, or perhaps a hand-crank.. that was pretty interesting.

by that token, has anybody found any great sites for observation work during the 'Great War'? This has been one of my pet interests because these are the pilots, who arguably, had the greatest impact on the outcome of the war... and they certainly don't get their fair share of the respect they deserve. what they did was surely every bit as dangerous and demanding as our beloved fighter jockies... and of course, every time I see Hugh post a message I remember that swell article about Captain Reginald Sheridan as a test pilot. kinda makes you glad they test everything out before they stick people in the line of fire nowadays... doesn't it.

I think Bob was asking about WW part deux. He might like to try

Luftwaffe Experten http://discserver.snap.com/Indices/69444.html
Classic Warbirds http://discserver.snap.com/Indices/69472.html
12 O'clock High Luftwaffe http://discserver.snap.com/Indices/3051.html
12 O'clock High Allies http://discserver.snap.com/Indices/37919.html

There's also a 12 O'clock High WWI forum at http://discserver.snap.com/Indices/41452.html

Vigilant

PS Jarrod, I couldn't agree more about the role of observation planes. We need to stand firm against all these fighter types

I had a look at Vigilant’s 12 o’clock high WW 1 forum. They seem to post about everything but WW 1 aviation.

Bravo Jarrod! Two-seater aircraft performed the tasks the armies needed form aiviation, recce and artilery observation, harrasment bombig and contact patrols. These were the jobs that were traditionally the role of light cavalry. Fighter planes only developed in response to the existence of the two seater.
