Looking at old pics of the Albatros Dl to Dlll series, I couldn't help but notice how low the upper wing is situated to the fuselage. Did this design trait enhance the flying performance of the Albatros? Also, are there any accounts of this low wing hindering the forward visibility of the pilots?

Marco, far from being detremental in terms of visibility it was if anything an advantage. The pilot may have had to squint a little under the wing, but he had an excelent field of view above it. If you study the progress of the basic Albatros design from DI through to DV you will notice that the top wing gets progressivly lower for precicely this reason. Many aircraft shared this feature, the Camel on the other hand had a comparatively high upper wing and was noted for its poor visibility in the upper quarter
