Well, first I think of the "Victory Scores" article the same that I think about the USAF Historical study that revised the USAAS scores to bring them in line with WWII/Modern standards.

I think it's changing the rules after the fact. The thing is, Barrett's article has no "official" standing. The USAF Historical Study does, sort of.

But then this is one of the BIG reasons I prefer to talk about "Victories" as opposed to talking about "kills". Victory was the termn applied during WWI, and was meant to signify an aerial victory over an opposing enemy aircraft.

It didn't matter if the aircraft was completely destroyed or not, simply whether or not the enemy lost.

BUT, I don't discount Barrett's article either. I think it is good to get a better perspective of where the WWI entent pilots actually stand on the basis of WWII rules. This is imporatant if you really want to try to compare WWI pilots to WWII pilots.

VBR,

Al Lowe

I agree with you there but we're not helped by some historians who continue to use the term "kills" in their books. Even Norman Franks isn't free of it.

Kind regards,

Reinout

Looks like this thread is spent - good! Talk about trial by fire . . .

As a "closing comment" for this thread, I'd like to point out, to those of you with Cable, who get the Discovery-Wings channel, they recently aired an episode of "Birds Of a feather" that dealt mostly with the German air Service in WWI.

But they did mention Billy Bishop, WITHOUT mentioning any thing about ANY controversy surrounding him. And in the process they mentioned some of HIS accomplishments, such as ending the Summer of 1917 with 47 victories. I would surmise that they sort of used him as a contrast to MvR.

That does help me to feel a little better.

VBR,

Al Lowe
