Greetings. I am seeking information on Leutnant Hans Waldhaussen, "The Eagle of Lens". Also, with such limited active service at the front, were there any confirmed victories by any pilots while flying the Fokker D8? Any and all info would be greatly appreciated

Bob,

According to the Windsock Datafile, by Peter Grosz, only one victory by a Fokker EV/DVIII has been confirmed - by Ltn. Emil Rolff of Jasta 6, 17 August 1918.

I thought I had read somewhere that Theo Osterkamp had claimed a victory on the DVIII. I know that he flew one in one of the Anaval squadrons.

Cross & Cockade Journal had a lengthy article on Waldhausen back in the 70s.
Osterkamp bailed out of an E.V, I believe; don't know that he scored in the type.

Re. Osterkamp scoring on the DVIII. If he did, could it not have been over a Soviet aircraft in the Baltic in 1919, when he was leading the Army/Navy volunteer airgroup there?

Leo,

Back to the Datafile; should have mentioned this earlier. Mr. Grosz actually has a footnote that Osterkamp did NOT obtain his 25th and 26th victories, as claimed by Gray and Thetford (German Aircraft of the First World War, Putnam, p. 110). Grosz mentions that in his biography, Osterkamp claimed not to have flown the DVIII very much, "because it was too slow to maintain pace with the squadron aircraft (Fokker DVIII)."

More from the Datafile, Note 2, Page 5: "During a solitary EV familiarization flight, Osterkamp was jumped by three Spads, forcing him to bail out. Curiously, this important event is not recorded in the squadron war diary."

Do you really have the complete KTB(War Diary) of Marine Feld Jagdstaffel 2 after 15 Sept 1918...?

This incident perhaps occured on 1 Oct 1918..and the Spads involved were probably French aircrafts.
I think this bailed out incident also is mentioned in Osterkamps own book, but without date.

curious

Gunnar,

I do not have the KTB. I was quoting PM Grosz, from the DVIII Datafile.
