Is anyone aware of any further research into the origins of the STROPP on the NASM DVa. I thought that with the improved information available since the 70's perhaps there was more to the story than the NASM discovered then.
Leo, any thoughts here?

the word "stropp" means "sling" in german, but also is a slang term for "hellraiser"; according to 'wings' magazine, volume 13 no. 6 december, 1983.
as to who actually flew the plane is not mentioned.
i hope this has helped you.

Stropp was a mate of Hoges in the 70’s.

I fear I do not have much to add, although I thought the word for sling was die Schleuder. My German is a bit on the archaic side so I am probably wrong.

I wonder if this is the source for the modern colloquial english use of the word.

To be in a strop is to be angry or annoyed.
Someone who is stroppy is argumentative, aggressive or angry.

Andy:
I am not familiar with the term "stroppy", but all I can say is it isn't common in SW Pennsylvania. Where have you heard this usage?

In common use in England today. Having a stroppy teenage daughter is a fate suffered by many a parent. The aforementioned daughter can be observed getting a strop on if asked to tidy it's room!!!

I had thought that a Stropp had been a razor sharpening belt,(or behind tanning tool )Hence the term 'stropping a razor'
or also the Australian interpretation 'If-you-##%&**!-kids-dont-shut-up-im-going-to-give-you-the-stropp'(now thats poetry!)
or 'dont get stroppy with me young man ,(insert above )'
If the inference is taken to be sharpening a very fine blade the word becomes quite a logo for a fighterplane.
Just a thought....
