On A RFC station what flag was Flown. Was it the Union Flag, Specific Squadron colours or the flag used by The RAF today.

David, I can't answer the question but I just popped in to say how refreshing it is to have someone NOT refer to the Union "Jack". My guess though would be some kind of ensign is the most likely answer, but what that might be I haven't a clue.

no help at all

Cone now, Peter. "Jack" is perfectly acceptable when the small flag is fluttering at the bow of a ship. I assume the "Union Jack" became a slang for any flag of the Britsh Empire because the non Eglish speaking world that would often hear the term "Union Jack" from British sailors as they went to and from port. If the Empire had not been so successful under Victoria, perhaps you wouldn't have to put up with "Union Jack"

Tobias, surely you wouldn't expect an ex-RAF type to have a good word to say for the fish-heads!!

David,

>On A RFC station what flag was Flown. Was it the Union Flag, Specific Squadron colours or the flag used by The RAF today.<

I found two pictures with flags in them but they were so far away form the camera to be indiscernable. I couldnt find anything to do with heraldry of that sort.

I did find a big mural painted in the mess at Cologne when 4 AFC was there. It has the Australian Flag and the Union Flag ( for Peter L ) crossed with a sheild and a pic of a barn in between and Australian wildlife around it ( ie standard Kookaburra etc ).

Question is though, was it the Australian Blue Ensign or Red Ensign?

Australia used a mixture of the Blue Ensign ( Federation Flag of 1901 ), the Red Ensign ( the Civil flag ) and the Union Flag in their recruiting posters. I dont know what the AFC or AIF fought under officially. I would also be interested to know if the heraldry of the AFC differed from the RFC. They wore differant wings, wonder if it extended to the flags too.

What flag did the RFC fly before they became the RAF?

Good questions

The (Australian) Army does not have, nor has ever had, a flag but different units fly Colours. I assume that the British Army is the same. The British navy flies ensigns. The Royal Air Force has a flag. Logic dictates that the RFC (army) would not raise the flag of a force which does not exist, an RAF (air force) flag. I imagine that each squadron, being part of the army, either, flew unit colours or the Union J… er er Flag. Interesting question, bears further research.
