My Gallery
I am trying to determine paint use for USAS DH4 in front line squadrons in WWI. Most of the photos I see are of complete green camo paint for all upper surfaces and complete fuselage. HOWEVER, there are many photos I have seen showing green only on topsides and TOPSIDE of fuselage leaving sides more of a CDL/yellow/tan. Many of the later, tend to appear from training squadrons, depots, or assembly of these planes.

Was the topside green and CDL side version employed in front line use. Does anyone have any photos showing planes in this scheme for the 50th Aero, 8th, or 135th?

Wingstrut-There are color profile of two DH-4's in MEDAL OF HONOR-AVIATORS OF WORLD WAR ONE by Alan E. Durkota. These are from the 50th and the USMC section of Northern Bombing Group. They are both depicted as light bottom/dark top that you refer to. HISTORY OF THE 135TH AERO SQUADRON by Percival Gray Hart (reprint from Battery Press) shows black and white photos that appear to be twin color. Caption under one pic says "'Liberty DH-4s of the 135th Aero Squadron. Note the dark color of the nearest aircraft. Most of the squadrons ships were creme colored." The pic, of course, is of an all dark one. Also, the history of 50TH AERO SQUADRON A.E.F., copyrighted by Daniel P. Morse, Jr.(don't know if this one is available as reprint) shows black and whites in the creme scheme.
Regards,
Steve
