Im with you the "Smithy" series was utter rubbish.

FWIW Dept: The two best performances in "Zulu" were Nigel Green as Colour Sergeant Bourne (I want him in MY army!) and Jack Hawkins as the alcoholic preacher. Green is just superb: professional, competent, soul of empire.
Lapse-dissolve, fast-forward: There's a very brief segment in "Legends of the Fall" wherein a Scottish regiment goes over the top in '15 behind a (Brit-type) football kicked toward the German lines. Most viewers probably wonder WTH, but there's evidence it was fairly common early in the war.
