I really wanted to buy Udet's bio "Ace of the Cross" but found out that it's out of print ??? and it's only possible to buy used ones on Amazon. I cannot understand why this book is not in print. Are there legal matters or what? Is it hard to get one?
Best regards.

Mannock:

Here's a little background info. *Udet's book was originally published in German under the title Mein Fliegerleben in 1935. *It was translated in English by Kenneth Kirkness and published under the title Ace of the Black Cross in 1938. *It was again translated by Richard Riehn and published in 1970, during the time when there was a resurrgence in interest with WWI aviation. *

There probably just isn't the demand out there for a newly printed book. *Actually, the "prize" now is to obtain a 1st edition of the 1938 book.

You might try checking out Bookfinder and search under the author "Udet".

Amy,

* * If I can one up you a little bit (or perhaps not), I have a copy of "Mijn leven als Vliegenier", by Udet, published in Dutch in 1943 by Volksche Uitgeverij 'Westland', Amsterdam. *Obviously a little bit of WWII propaganda going on here. *But, it was the closest I could find to the 1935 German edition. Rick:

Yup, you've topped me! *I've got Mein Fliegerleben and a treasured 1st edition English copy, but alas, I have no copy of Mijn leven als Vliegenier. *I guess it's just as well, my Dutch isn't what it used to be.

I have noticed that the original 1935 Mein Fliegerleben contains a mid-section of pictures. *Unfortunately, the 1st edition English version only contains an opening photo of Udet--there is no mid-section of pictures. *Anyone know why the English version got cheated out of the photo section? *Do any of the other versions of this book contain a photo section?

Cheer up, even though I am Dutch, Irish and English my Dutch is non-existent. The book does have a slew of good photos though. Cheap WWII type paper, but interspersed with quite a number of pics. R.

How about, THE FALL OF AN EAGLE; The Life of Fighter Ace Ernst Udet, by Armand Van Ishoven,ENGLISH VERSION edited by Chas Bowyer, ISBN 07183 0067 X; William Kimber publisher, 1977-1979 period. Lotsa photos, surely much the same story.Birth to death, 60+ photos.....( Radial engined DH 60 Moth D-1651 appeared in movie , provisional title, Sanders of The River.) The book contains his combat record, 18-3-'16 to 26-9-'18, and an exellent bibliography for further frustration, and the 'sources' reek of famous names. .50 cents at a Library chuck-out sale.

I went searching on the Internet, and found bookstores offering copies of Mein Fliegerleben in French, Dutch, German, and Czech (hurry! Only one copy!). *Even English too, hardback and paperback. *Two copies of the 1930's English translation (I ordered one for myself; hopefully it is still available). *Prices vary, but I think there were cheap paperbacks available in English.

I purchased a copy of Udet's book in a military book shop not too long ago. It is a 1981 issue from Arco Publishing Company. Perhaps I am luckier than I realize. I didn't know the book was hard to find.
