Finally got the book "McCudden V.C." by Christopher Cole. In it he quotes from "War Birds" the diary of an American named Grider who served in 85 squadron. To paraphrase: the general ASKED the squadron who they wanted for CO. He wanted to send them McCudden. They didn't want him because he got the huns himself and didn't give others a chance and because of his social class. Cole also addresses Mannock being the son of a regular army corporal, yet being acceptable to the elite 85th. He thinks that McCudden's background was widely known because of his VC, while Mannocks wasn't. Oddly enough, I just found a copy of "War Birds" last Sunday. If I find anything further, I'll post it.
