Nieuports XVII 1324, 1354, 1420, 1586, 1851 and 2279 ("Rene") were captured by the German side.
Nieuport 1276 landed by mistake on the Jasta 9 airfield.
Oviously all pilots became POWs.

Does anyone (Bill??) know their names and units?

Mosen,

The Nieuport serial for "Rene" is 2779 according to photographic evidence. It is the aircraft in which Hermann Pfeifer met his death on May 20,1917. Two photos of the aircraft are in Neal O'Connor's vol. V. One of the wreckage is on the inside front cover, and another that shows that shows the aircraft prior to the Eiserne Kreuz markings being applied on pg. 55. That is the only tidbit I can help with I'm afraid.

Regards,

Aaron

Thank you all very much.

Bill, unfortunately there are no dates or any other information given to the photos. 1276 could have happened in April 1917, but not sure (Lieutenant Carré ?).
Do you know if they have a/c numbers in the archives in Vincennes?

Aaron, you are right. The number is 2779 and it is the same photo as in Awards/VI.

Mosen,

I have a note that on 12 April 1917 a Nieuport-onseater was landing at the airfield of Leffincourt. Pilot was the Caporal Carré. He was uninjured taken POW.
I think its a very good candidate for Nieuport 1276.

Everyon is correct, Nieuport XVII #2779 was flown by Caporal Marcel Carre, Escadrille N 112, who landed for unknown reason at Leffincourt. The only other infomationn I have on him at this time is teh he held French Aero Club Pilot Breevt #4650, issued on 18 October 1916.
Here are the names of a few pilots who were listed as missing who were flying Nieuport XVIIs:
Lt des Vallières, N 12, 14 Dec 1916. MIA, Forced to land in enemy territory during a bombing raid.
Adj François Brun, N 31, MIA 15 Dec 1916.
Cpl Girard, N 31, Nieuport XVII #2409, MIA 16 feb 1917.
S/Lt Gaston Loup, N 65, Nieuport XVII #1476, MIA 5 Jan 1917.
Sgt James McConnell, N 124, Nieuport XVII #2055, MIA near Flavy-le-Martel.

Maybe later on after I return to New Jersey where me records are I could possibly help more.

Hi Mosen

According the monthly German list of captured aircraft Nieup N 1324 was brought down on 6 July 1916.
The pilot S/lt Jean Raty from Esc N 38 was reported wo POW

Some reports states that he was brought down by Oblt Student as his first victory.

Thank you Bill, Gunnar and Rammjäger for your information.
But there remains a question. If 2779 was landed by Carre on April 14, 1917, at Leffincourt, who flew 1276?? A friend of mine has a couple of photos showing Nieuport 1276 with the captured French pilot at Leffincourt surrounded by some Jasta 9 personal. The handwritten description is "Kiebitzfang der Jasta 9 in Leffincourt" what could be translated as "Catching of a peewit by Jasta 9". Was Jasta 9 really so lucky to get delivered two Nieuport XVII within a few weeks without any shot?
Bill, please keep this problem in your mind and have occasionally a look into your archives.

One add-on:

General von Einem noted in his diary for 12. April 1917 the downing of two hostile airplanes and the landing of two others on the airfields in Attigny and Leffecourt after stormy weather.
