Happy New Year,

Did any air service members ever receive the Bavarian Gold Bravery medal or Saxony's St Heinrich's Gold Medal? If so, who were they? Thanks

JArigi,

According to Neal O'Connor's books, "Aviation Awards of Imperial Germany in WWI and the Men Who Won Them", Vol. I (Bavarian) and Vol. III (Saxon), there were five awards of the Bavarian Gold Bravery Medal and 3 awards of the St Heinrich Gold Medal, to wit

Bavarian, the date is the date of action:

Offz.Stv. Heinrich Metz, P, FA 6b, 6Sep15
Uffz. Peter Gregor Weber, P, FA 102b, 20Feb16
Offz.Stv. Max Müller, P, Jasta 28, April,May,June 1917
Vzfw. Fritz Danker, P, FA 293(A)b, Dec 12,13,14 1917
Vzfw. Ludwig Maier, P, FA 298(A)b, Sep 12,13,14 1918

Saxon, the date is the date of award:

Offz.Stv. Rudolf Sattler, P, FA 278(A)s, 28Feb17
Offz.Stv. Paul Aue, P, Jasta 10, 24Jul17
Vzfw. Walter Dittrich, P, Jasta 1, 24Jul17.

Rick,

Thanks for the help. Noticed Max Muller's name on the list. Were there any other awards of both the Max-Joseph Order and Gold Bravery Medal? Also, any idea were I can get my hands on these O'Conner books?

JA, You are more than welcome. No, Max Müller was the only one to earn both the Gold Bravery Medal and the Max Joseph Order.

As far as Neal's books go, Vol. I (Bavarians) is hard to find, the others are available and can be found at almost any WWI aviation book site. Vol. VII, the grand finale, is due out any time now. These are GREAT books!!! Amy, any help here?? Rick

Icarus Books offers the following "Aviation Awards of Imperial Germany" books for sale: Vol. III, Vol. IV, Vol. V, and Vol. VI. *Here's the link: Icarus Books. *Click on the link to view to catalog and there's a linked section devoted to the "Aviation Awards of Imperial Germany" series.

Obtaining a copy of Vol. I (Bavarian) and Vol. II (Prussia) editions is a little more tricky. *The last time I saw a Vol. I for sale was on Ebay about 4-5 years ago and it sold for approx. $175.00. *I've never seen a Vol. II for sale since it went out of print, but you might get lucky in your area.

As Rick wrote, the last book of the series (Vol. VII) is due out sometime this year--February 2002 (??) maybe. *And I'll also add that these books are GREAT! *I'm constantly using them as a reference.
