DPC Models

Yesterday I E-mailed Dave Cowell to find out when my order for 4 of his kits would arrive. He replied Tuesday or Wednesday. I sent him 1/72 scale drawings of the Fokker D.I, D.II and D.III and the Pfalz D.VIII which he said in a previous telecon that he would like to kit. I ordered the Alb. D.Va, Pfalz D.III, Pfalz D.XII, and the Rol. D.VIb. I am anxiously looking forward to them. I intend to make forms to cover the two Pfalz aircraft with molded shells and clinker-plank the Rol.D.VIb with 1/64" birch ply. I have asked Dave to produce the Fok.D.VII and the S.E.5a, hope he does.

I don't know DPC Dan-San, tell me more. What material? Are they in the manly scale or teeny weeny munchkin scale?

Accoding to Dave Cowell his kits are 3/4"=1', however the wing span seems a little short at 18" for an Alb.D.Va. I am going to have to recheck that span dimension. Anyhow I'll report in as soon as I get them.

It's nice to see the interest in DPC models, as I said in the previous forum.
I got the Pfalz dIII *dxii and the pfalz Drl ( on ebay) a good while back. And they are excellent (although at that time DPC didn't lazer cut them), but they turned out beautiful.
I can't wait to get the rest of them! I'm in no way affiliated with Dpc I just love what Dave is doing and wanted to share with people that love WWI aircraft

It was your post on the old Forum that got me going on this.project with DPC Models. I hope they come tomorrow. Thank you for posting your thread.

I checked the scale and it appears to be around 1/20th? The kits are balsa wood framing with japanese tissue covering. The cowlings etc. are vacuform plastic sheet. The wing span are 18 -18 3/4" The Pfalz DR.I and Fok. E.V/D.VIII are photographed in frame and look very good. The outlines look correct.

Well as soon as they arrive I'll check them out and report on line.

I will be very interested in your opinion of the DPC models. I hope they come soon. If they are as good as they look on the web site, I will need them all!

I suggested to Dave at DPC models a SPAD A2, (I like the strange, unusual and obscure) He said it would be difficult to make a flyer out of it but not Impossible. I like to make mine stand off and not flying (although the airfoil keeps the stand off from being really real, they still look cool, I have used solid copper electric wire for different things like water pipes, radiator cores, push rods. Aluminum screen cut at an angle makes a real looking radiator front. Thin metal punch outs (with a hand paper punch) for small inspection plates, fabric pin heads for rivits.all kinds of neat stuff to make the Guillows/DPC scale models look cool. I work maintenance in a print shop where the thin aluminun print plates .008 to .013 make great sheet metal cowlings and panels. The oval slugs from the plate locator punch outs *also make great inspection plates. *And I keep the band-aid company in business *;D..
Any other ideas?

added: I have found most balsa models are out of scale because of the design for rubber or or other methods of powered flight. Wing chord may be wider..span adjusted for long flights, tail surfaces changed and such, But an experienced modeller can usually fix this. (leaves me out cuz I used to sometimes end up with a wooden glue ball with a propeller. and never add rigging to a balsa model before the tissue dries..it's not a pretty sight. A Sopwith pretzel wing?) *:-[ :

Hooray!

they finally got here! I purchased 4 kits, Alb.D.Va, Pfalz D.III, PfalzD.XII and the Rol. D.VIb. The drawing are 24"x18" All 4 have reasonably good outlines without the distortions of of way oversized tails. The model are designed as flying models and have the usual light weight construction.
the fuselages are the Cleveland /Guillow half shell construction. The nose and wheels are vacu-formed white plastic sheet. The balsa strip wood and sheet are first rate quality and well finished. All the parts are Lazar cut so the tedious work is taken out of it.

There are no decals, black tissue is provided for the crosses.
Aluminum-grey tissue is provided in both Pfalz kits and yellow tissue in the Rol D.VIb and Alb. D.Va kits. A grey plastic 6"propeller is in the kit and a music wire shaft and hook as well as 3/16" rubber strip for propulsion power. They are of the quality of the Guillow kits with a lot of potential for the modeler (like me) that wants to make scale model. The scale is 5/8"=1'. They are nice and worth the money.

Now I'm happy!
