Gentlemen,
I would be interested to know what colour paints you use to obtain the laminated propellor efect in 1/72nd and 1/48th scale.

My Gallery
well...
I think your biggest problem would be paint application. I sure somebody has done this well, but I don't remember ever seeing it :
Color choice would be the simple part - any contrasting dark and light wood color should do the trick.

Have you considered carving the prop?
I've done it a couple of times and it's not as hard as it looks.
I laminated 5-6 pieces of 1/64 in plywood to build the stock using CA. I then glued a scaled front view of the prop to the front and carved the outline.
then just start whittling/ sanding.
Makes a VERY nice addition to a model

I'm still wondering how to pull this off with a "virtual" model.

I tried it in 1/72 scale, paint the prop a light brown then add the grain effect with a dark brown pencil crayon.I found it looked better in that scale if you make a big contrast in the browns, never tried it in 1/48 though.

I model mostly in 1/48th (the other is 1/32nd) and my technique is not that much different .
After painting the propeller light brown I use a short bristle brush with the end cut-off, dip it in brown paint then wipe most of it off on tissue paper. I then gently stroke up and down the propeller making small vein-like lines on the propeller - almost like dry-brushing, really. I must admit the use of a dark-brown pencil did not occur to me before .I'll give it a try
on my next propeller!
One more tip - overcoat the propeller with a coat of clear Orange afterwards - looks just like varnished wood.

Martin,

till now I painted propellers only in Humbrol 110, but I'm planning to do a laminated prop in my next model, and my idea is to use 110 (Matt Natural Wood) and 63 (Matt Sand).

All the best from Brazil

I mentioned this in another thread and I`ll mention it in this one too: Have you tried using "Brushwood" by Dulux paints??This is my thechnique;match the supplied basecoat to one from your paintchest[the dulux one is Emulsion,it don`t stick-I tried!!] apply, then apply the topcoat. It works. And you can get testers of these this from your local hardware store for about a quid[there are several colours].Try it and call me a liar[the truth will out ].
