Scottie;
A very nice model. However, the turquoise was only on the bottom surfaces, not the top and side surfaces. The seat belt was attached to the lower longeron /vertical strut quadrant joint and the shoulder harness to the top cross tube behind the seat. A very nice job. I have a suspicion that you got a hold of one of Rodney Gerrard's phony Voss reports. I hope not.
Happy New Year

Hi Dan,

I hope that my research is correct or else I will have to repaint my F1- my aim was for total accuracy. The colour info was supplied by Mr.Achim Engels after some detailed correspondence- no stranger to these forums I'm sure. He told me that from his archives the info was that the first 3 prototypes were finished with the turquoise overall, and then the olive green streaking on the upper surfaces.

If you can shed any more light on this subject I would be delighted to hear from you.

My Gallery
Scottie;
The for prototypes, Fok. F.I 100. 102,103/17 were given three coats of clear dope and the tops of the wings, tailplane and fuselage were painted with one coat of olive-brown wash in a streaky finish on the fabric surfaces. The under sides of the wings, tailplane, axle wing, and fuselage were painted with one coat of sky blue with a coat of copal varnish over all surfaces for the purpose of water-proofing. The varnish caused a yellow shift in the sky blue to turquoise. The Axle wing top surface and all cowlings, engine, side and top panels were painted a solid olive brown.
The cabane, interplane and tailplane struts, were painted sky blue and varnished, thus turquoise. The upper wing, fuselage and rudder crossfields were painted flat white over matte black crosses. The matte black crosses under the lower wing were painted on the clear doped cross fields,they were NOT painted white. All markings were matte black.
Happy New Year,
Dan-San

Problem with these Werner Voss aircraft threads is,every time I read one I look at my last attempt at his plane and sigh.:
Then I drag another kit out of the cupboard and start again.
Soon I'll be into double figures,and I'm about as much a fan of the flying Venetian Blind as I am the dwarf like Werner himself.

Huh? *Every other reference I have seen IRT the F.Is (and some of the early Dr.Is as well) state that overall they were finished turquoise overall with the olive streaking over the turquoise.

In fact, the base undercoat of the F.Is definitely appear different than the base undercoat of most of the other Dr.Is (in tone, at least).

Odd, very odd.

Scottie, between the debate about the presense or otherwise of turquoise dope, whether it was actually turquoise or blue with a copal varnish shift, the yellow/olive/red/and for all I know chequered cowling, not to mention the colour of the rudder, I'd stick with what I have if I were you.

It's ironic that what must be one of the two best known and documented scraps of the entire war has so many unknowns attached to it.

Ginger,
Are you ever right! I had a Voss tripe built but after research could not stand looking at the "inaccurate" paint job. Tore it apart and am now repainting it and rebuilding it in the middle of all this controversy so it lies in a broken heap at the moment. Think I'll follow Dan-San because no one argues with him and if worst comes to worst Peter's advice rules!
