Despite everything, the New Forum is better. Yeah it is a pain to keep up with all the topic lists. And for those of us not having DSL, it takes forever to load stuff. Still, there is a certain level of civility here that one did not always find in the old forum. I think that it is because of the lack on anonymity. Certain individuals on the old forum acted as though acrimony was a virtue, and I believe that it was because they were anonymous. Here, Scott knows who they are, whether we do or not. There is accountability. I like that.

We are more likely to be on our best behavior. What is wrong with that?

Yes, I miss the old forum, and how! I find this one so time-consuming that I can only manage to log in once in a blue moon, and these few fly-bys are getting me more lost than ever because I can no longer see everything at a glance. Furthermore, if I wanted to see if there were any threads on Billy Bishop, I would have to download almost every topic heading just for a peek, and that's before I even get to the threads themselves.

I can understand how the security makes some of you feel more at-ease, though I admit I never thought any of you the type who would back down from a good dogfight. The atmosphere, too, has changed. Though I was away for much of the infamous flaming that is said to have taken place, I found the old forum much more congenial.

Vin had it right when he described them as the old forum being a big room where everyone gathered, and the new forum many small rooms into and out of which everyone scurries.

I have mixed feelings about the new format.
While it's nice to have everything pigeonholed, I miss the old structure where a seemingly innocuous thread on the merits of a certain plane or pilot would quickly spiral OOC, with resultant tangents about Reagan, the Civil War, or Navy chow.
(Come to think of it, I remember Civil War Navy chow as being absolutely intolerable, but that's all we had back then. Think "creamed chip beef on toast" without the beef. And without the toast, usually.)

I agree with Micheal Skeet. The quality of the postings in this forum are much higher and the atmosphere is much more learned. I greatly enjoy reading the posts in the new forum even if I dont contribute. I predominantly ignore the off-topic section which in the old forum would have been inter-weaved through the old forums threads. The threads in the this forum are much more focused. It is all good IMO.

Cam:

I like a little controversy now and then, so I frequent the off topic zone a great deal. However, comma, I know that is what I am getting when I go there. I disliked how some threads could slide far off topic on the old forum to the point that we all forgot what the topic was. That is true even when I was a contributing cause.

The techno-weenies do tend to dominate the other sections, but by and large it is from them that I learn stuff about the Great War that I did not previously know (as well as unlearn stuff that I thought I knew).

Shooter,

Yes, I tend to go to other sites for the topics that tend to frequent the off-topic section, but I like how it is broken off into a differant section on this forum. It mimics the way I use the forum which is good and I dont begrudge those that post to the off-topic section either.

Guilty too in the past, the segmenting by topics has made the threads much more focused.

Yes same here, my WWI Aviation interests are highly secular, I greatly enjoy that the forum has a multi-national group that shares information and knowledge so readily. I also enjoy how the messages posted can vary from dipping the toe in the water questions, to broad three line summaries to "figures and quotes a plenty". There is also a diverse set of opinions as well which always makes for interesting debate on a point.

In the time I have been posting to the forum it has been maturing nicely IMHO. Kudo's to the Webmaster!

I agree the Forum is more focussed now, but that doesn't mean that it's rigid. Look at the The Greatest! thread if you want an example. It got off onto some very amusing bypaths.

The categories are the logical outcome of that answer that was given so often in the Alte Forum whenever someone complained of "off topic" - "If you don't like it you don't have to read it!" Scott just made it a lot easier not to read it by putting it elsewhere. For which I thank him.

Billy Bishop draws more fire than the whip antenna on a PRC-25 radio. Perhaps Scott should dedicate a separate category just for Al.
