Michael! Welcome back partner! Mighty good to "see" you again.

(Waving hand from back row--me too! Me too!) I really enjoy "Silverado." It sort of revived the Western (for the umpteenth time) by itself after a long drought. Blazin' guns and galloping hosses; good good guys and bad bad guys. Yee-haw!

While "Darling Lili" doesn't make anybody's top 100 list (Unless it's Great War musicals!) I do have to put in a word for Gloria Paul as the sizzling chanteuse, "Crepe Suzette." In her presence I'd be a serious security risk. I would GLADLY tell her ANYTHING she wanted to know, including the date, time, and place of The Big Push. After all, it's only tens of thousands of lives at stake, and I hardly know any of those blokes...

Growing up in the '50's I thought all war flicks were B&W. *Saturday matinees did not seem to have many that were not.

Some of my favorites: Gregory Peck, Rip Torn, etc. in Pork Chop Hill; James Whitmore, Van Johnson, Don Taylor, et al in Battleground, Gregory Peck, Dean Jagger, Gary Merrill and the rest of the cast in 12 o'Clock High, a Brit flick filled with actors I never heard of in a piece called Yesterday's Enemy, and last--but hardly least--John Wayne, Forrest Tucker, and Jon Agar in the Sands of Iwo Jima.

Semper Fi,

12 o'Clock High was great. Sands of Iwo Jima BETTER be on that top 100 list somewhere!!! I'm pretty sure John Wayne was also in a movie about the Flying Tigers... but I don't remember much else, other than that I enjoyed it.

Full Metal Jacket is a MUST SEE for Marines- a lot closer to the truth than most other films. No, it's not 100%, but still pretty good.

I was stunned when I saw the first half of Full Metal Jacket the very first time. I saw it with a buddy who had not been in the military and all I could tell him was 'it brought me back to boot camp like no other movie ever has'! I went through it in 1969 and we still had M-14's just like in the film....and Lee Ermy as the drill instructor was absolutely perfect. I didn't know at the time that he really was a Marine drill instructor at one time. When my buddy asked me if that is what boot camp was really like, I had to tell him that it was close...but in real boot camp you usually have two, sometimes three drill instructors yelling at you. In the movie, the others are sometimes seen in the background but they are much more quiet than the ones I had!

I didn't like the 2nd half of the movie nearly as much as the 1st half...but it is still a "must-see" movie on my list.

Paths of Glory....this one would make my top 10 movie list every single time. From beginning to end, it really grabs me every time I see it. I read 'somewhere' that it was banned in France for many years because of way it portrays the French High Command.

The Blue Max....maybe it is just for us WWI aviation buffs but it is one of my all-time favorites. (okay.....the towel scene has to appeal to the males of this forum even if it had been a movie about a florist or something like that! And just think...John Derek was married to her....Linda Evans and Bo Derek! Life just isn't fair!!!!!!!!!!!!!) Now if the Blue Max would just come out on DVD.

I would have to add to that list Shane, The Shootist and that flick with the Duke and William Holden as a union calvary commander and surgeon respectively. The scene where that old man is marching his cadets off to fight the yanks is very moving to me. I also have to wonder where Cagney in Yankee Doodle Dandy and Errol Flynn in Robin Hood are. Add Goodfellas, Gandhi, The Quiet Man and then lose the Graduate, and we're getting there.

The dialogue in "True Grit" was identical to the dialogue in the book (which was serialized in "Colliers"....talk about history!)
While the speech may seem stilted by our "loose" standards (confusing "lay" and "lie", "imply" and "infer", ferinstance), there was a time when proper grammar was a very important part of even the most elementary education.
And, a preposition was something you did NOT end a sentence with....

Denny...the movie with The Duke and William Holden in the Union Cavalry is "The Horse Soldiers". I'm rather partial to that one, myself.

Which reminds me of another favorite movie of mine starring William Holden....The Bridges at Toko-ri. I'm going to have to buy that one one of these days.

Re "The Horse Soldiers"; as a member of the SCV, it pained me to see a line of Confederate cavalry carrying the Naval Jack instead of the Battle Flag. :'(

As for the list of top 100 movies, where was "Plan Nine From Outer Space" and "Surf Nazis Must Die"? Their omission being, obviously, a horrendous oversight.

Would it be possible to add my humble opinion to this discussion?
"The Wild Bunch."
I grew up loving the old cowboy films, but when I saw this one I sat through it twice and then got kicked out trying for the hat trick.
My all time favourite quotes are from the Duke's films, Pike runs him close with.
"If they move kill 'em."

Ginger:

I forgot about the Wild Bunch, old man. Great cast, good story, and Sam Peckinpah to direct.

There are no comedies mentioned. Well, Dr. Strangelove might fit the bill, or the wonderful rivalry between Omar Sharif and Anthony Quinn In Lawrance (or, AwRance) of Arabia. I would vote for Some Like it Hot. As you might know, comedy is what some people live for.
