Like Amy, I read 10-12 books a year.

70% historical (most of that WWI)
20% non fiction
10% fiction... invariably James Bond novels!

Like Barrett, I almost never read the newspaper or watch television news. I've made a living in the media for 19 years, and I absolutely guarantee you this:

If you watch the nightly news, you'll be dumber and more misinformed at 11:30 than you were at 11:00.

I cannot possibly overstress the absolute truth of that statement... and I know whereof I speak.

Most of the truly stupid people I've known in life - not the mildy dumb ones, mind you, but the first class, flat out, don't know their butt from a hole in the ground STUPID people - fit in to one of two categories:

They were either a) TV news junkies, or B) college professors.

I do not universally condemn either; I simply observe the coincidental connection.

I read about 5-6 books a year. I used to read more than this before (at least a book a month) but since buying a new house 3 years ago, I find my reading time severely curtailled.
House, wife, and new dog requires a lot of my time!
As for reading subject:

50% Military and/or Aviation history
25% fiction - Stephen King and Dean Koontz (I like
horror novels)
25% magazines - mostly Aviation (Wings, Airpower,
Windsock International and
DataFiles plus various scale models
magazines)

Some Books I Have Read 3 Times:
Bomber by Deighton
Sambru Bull by Scott (also God isMy Copilot)
The Killer Angels by Sharra the Elder
The Wooden Wolf by Kelly
Fix Bayonets! by Thomason
undoubtedly I'll read Gates of Fire a third time. Haven't gotten around to Sex & the Single Girl yet. (Just to see if you're paying attention)

The foregoing excludes my own books, of course. By the time the dang things are published I've probably read 'em 4-5 times.

I have several books that I always fall back on when I have nothing new to read. On the top of that list is Devil's Guard by George Robert Elford. The book is about a group of SS soldiers that escaped prosecution and enlisted, along with their commanding officer, in the Foreign Legion shortly after WW II. The stories of their 5 years of fighting in Indochina are incredible.

I was lucky enough to find my copy for .25 cents at a library book sale, little did I know that the book was banned shortly after it was printed and routinely sells for $100.00+ today! 8)

Like others who replied I normally have at least two books on the go at any one time so 1-3 books per week. And cannot sleep without reading SOMETHING >.Bedtime reading tends to be light stuff,a little sci-fi maybe fantasy, sometimes heavier, biography`s perhaps.Don`t have a teevee[gogglebox, television, whatever]left that behind when I got a place of my own so rely on newspapers and radio for news[Seem to be addicted to BBCRadio5live!!,speechbased station ]
So total reading is in order of 100 books pa split roughly one third each of History,Biography and science fiction/fantasy.

Mike: Welllll....yes, I'd probably read it if I ever actually, like, ya know...uh, BOUGHT a copy.
However: my fiancee' recently delivered to me with her very own hands the latest Victoria's Secret catalog. Now THAT is beddy-by "reading"! (After all, the pix have captions and...more to her intent, I believe...prices)
I *really* like the offering on p.41...

Hmmmm... here's a thought: Go to the local Victoria's Secret store, and browse around. When the salesgirl asks if she can help you, say: "I think so... you're about my (wife's/girlfriend's/fiance's) size... can you try this on and show me how it looks?
