I have often puzzled over just who the best Anglo-American commander of WW2 might have been. Montgomery struck me as a bit of a self-centred twit, and Patton as a blowhard, but these two men are usually listed as amongst the best Allied generals.
My vote goes to Field Marshall Slim, a soldier's soldier who recaptured Burma.
Any others care to give their opinions?

Patton was just about the only allied general the germans paid attantion to.

Monty was better on defense, but their war was offense.

I think Patton was the best tactician but he would never learn to play the political part of the game. His main weakness or, perhaps, strength was his high rate of casualties. As my Dad and Uncle used to say, "Old Blood and Guts. Our blood, his guts."

I'd have to put Curtis LeMay and Claire Chenault up near the top, too.

In my opinion the top allied general of WW2 is Georgij Konstantinowitsch Schukow (1896 - 1974). He made his way from Stalingrad to Berlin.

For the western allied side only it would be Bradley or Eisenhower.

Don't be daft chaps,this one's easy,it's Monty.
The Yanks proved it when they asked him to sort the mess out in the Bulge for them.

Hmmm!

The Russians had a couple of good generals but let's face it, the real hero of the Eastern Front was Mother Nature.

Monty? Great in North Africa... after that? Two words: Market Garden.

Bradley? Good General, Good Politician.

Eisenhower? Good General, Great Politician.

Patton? Great General, Lousy Politician (but who cares?) It was Gen. von Rundstedt who said "Patton. He is your best!" The Wehrmact knew who did the best job of kicking their butts back across Europe.

Yes, and Monty made his smartest decision of the war and let Patton handle it!

George C Marshall in the West and Zhukov in the East. Marshall was the mastermind behind all american and Western Allied planning. Georgi Zhukov kicked the crap out of the Germans.
