Mike and Wayne: Thanks, guys. Somehow I did forget IHW. Incidentally, when Duke, Kirk Douglas and crowd invaded Hawaii to film the epic in 1965, Marion Carl (then BGEN USMC) was prepping his brigade for Danang. Marion--a gentleman to the bone--was not impressed with the Hollywood types though he did say he preferred Douglas to the others, especially Duke's drinking buddies like Chill Wills.
Break-break.
One of the local PD training officers runs a pop quiz for the academy students. After every range session the newbies are excused from policing (pun!) brass if they can answer the John Wayne Question du Jour. Such as:
What was JW's real name?
What was his dog's name?
Cite three movies in which The Duke died.
Name three movies The Duke starred with Maureen O'Hara.
What was the name of Duke's horse in True Grit?

Shees! OK, this is a bad attempt, and off the top 'o my head.
What was JW's real name?
Marion Michael Morrison.
What was his dog's name?
Dunno. sorry.
Cite three movies in which The Duke died.
The Cowboys.
Sands of Iwo Jima.
The Alamo.
Name three movies The Duke starred with Maureen O'Hara.
North to Alaska.
The Quiet Man.
McClintock (OK, dammit, I fudged on these last two.)
What was the name of Duke's horse in True Grit?
"Bo".

His dog's name was Duke. When J.W. was a kid he and his dog used to pass by a firehouse on his way to school. The firemen could remember the dog's name but not his. So, they called the dog big Duke and him little(?) Duke.
Now, what was the name of his drunken cat in "True Grit"?
Regards,
Wayne

Two roles in which the Duke was totally out of his element were when he was cast as Ghengis Khan and a German Sea captain.

I didn't think he came off as
Davey Crockett to well although
"The Alamo" was good
When I picture Davey Crockett I
picture Fess Parker

As I understand it, the Duke did not want to star in the Alamo. His financial backers insisted that he play a role before they would provide the money to make the flick. Since the other roles had already be cast, Crockett was the only one remaining.
JW did not resemble Crockett, since he was not lean and lanky enough, but that did not seem to bother anyone at the time.
The Duke's best role, IMHO, was the part of Tom Donofin. The dialog between he and Jimmie Stewart is classic.
Donofin (to Ransom Stoddard): "As far as packing a gun, you can forget it. You're a tenderfoot, and Liberty Valance is the toughest man south of the Picket Wire...*points to himself*...next to me!"
